At peak, there were more than 4,000 drive-ins throughout the US. As of 2017, there were fewer than 400 in operation. While indoor theatres did not suffer the same fate, the increasing popularity of television in the 1950s also had an adverse effect on brick and mortar cinemas as well. Those in downtown areas were hit the hardest, as expanding suburbs drew business away from city centers across the United States.
